Brewing beer is relatively inexpensive to do once you have the necessary materials and information, according to Phil Angerhofer, alias Dr. Brew. Here is a list of supply houses, useful publications and home-brewing organizations. SUPPLY HOUSES

The initial equipment investment is about $60, Angerhofer says. Required are a two- or three-gallon stainless steel, cooper or porcelain pot, a thermometer (to check the temperature before adding the yeast), a hydrometer (to measure specific gravity), a sterilant (chlorine bleach or sodium metabisulfite), a long-handled wooden stirring spoon, a food-grade five-gallon polyethylene container for fermenting, siphon hose, bottles, bottle caps and a capper. Ingredients should run about $7 to $12 initially, at least until you get into exotic imported hops and malts.
