Triumphing over 145 cookbook entries in the International Association of Cooking Professionals/Seagrams Awards, "Roger Verge''s Entertaining in the French Style," (Stewart, Tabori & Chang), a 318-page, high-gloss/country-style cookbook, carried away the "Best of the Year" award.
Divided by menus complete with preparation schedule and beverage and linen suggestions, it is the kind of book that makes you wish not so much to cook but to dine at someone's country estate and eat copious amounts of everything portrayed in the book's alluring photographs.
In addition to the "Best of the Year" award, "Roger Verge''s Entertaining in the French Style" also won first place in the Entertaining category, besting "Pleasures of the Table" by Florence Fabricant with photographs by Matthew Klein (Harry N. Abrams, Inc.) and "Lee Baileys' Good Parties" (Clarkson N. Potter, Inc), which placed second and third respectively.
Faye Levy also showed a good year, winning both the General/Basic category with her "Classic Cooking Techniques" (California Culinary Academy) and the Desserts/Baking category with "Faye Levy's Chocolate Sensations" (HP Books).
Another double winner was Better Homes and Gardens Books, which was first and third in the Health and Diet division with "Better Homes and Gardens Diet Recipes" and "Better Homes and Gardens Eating Healthy Cookbook."
A panel of 22 judges was chosen to decide from the 145 entries of which 39 were to receive winner and runner-up placements in the 13 categories.
