A MAN ON THE MOVE: Patrick Bazin's commute is about to get shorter. The 42-year-old chef plans to leave The Occidental (1475 Pennsylvania Ave. NW; 202-783-1475) Friday after more than six years of cooking in the historic Washington venue. "I want to become part of the fabric of a community," he says, explaining his decision to move from downtown to Vienna, where he lives. Plus, "I've always wanted to own my own restaurant." He and his wife, Julie, who will oversee the dining room, hope to open the 80-seat Bazin's on Church (113 Church St., Vienna) sometime in December. The menu will be American. The chef is aiming for entrees in the range of $16 to $25 and flavors that could hardly be described as routine: wild salmon poached in olive oil and lapped with smoked bacon beurre blanc, for instance, and lamb lollipops -- minty lamb threaded on a Popsicle stick and served with a relish of chipotle and red grapes.

EXPANDING THEIR SIGHTS: Silver Spring's funky and long-lived Quarry House (8401 Georgia Ave.; 301-587-9406) is poised for a major makeover. Jackie Greenbaum and Patrick Higgins, owners of the nearby Jackie's (8081 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring; 301-565-9700), are taking over the basement property -- "a cross between a speak-easy and a rec room," says Greenbaum -- in December. They plan to outfit the space with red vinyl booths, give it "a film noir feel" and serve "our take on bar food." That means mini-burgers and pork riblets from the menu at Jackie's, but also hot dogs, a Waldorf salad and classic sandwiches, which Jackie's chef Sam Adkins is busy testing on his staff during the restaurant's staff meals. "We're happy for the gentrification of Silver Spring," says Greenbaum, "but we didn't like the thought of the Quarry House shutting down." Respectful of the pub's history -- it dates to "at least the 1930s" -- the restaurateurs say they want to update it so as not to "lose its soul." Greenbaum isn't worried about competing with herself: Unlike Jackie's, she points out, Quarry House will serve lunch and dish up live music at night. "It will be more of a lounge."

Chef Patrick Bazin will work closer to home.
