Every year, on the Tuesday after Memorial Day, the newspapers tell of the previous weekend's traffic jams on the way to the beaches. That makes one good reason to stay closer to home, and the National Park Service has given us another. Today is the opening of the summer-long Artists in Action program, which is touring local parks until September 4. A committee of artists screened several hundred portfolios of local artists to choose 225 who are eligible to demonstrate their work each Sunday for the public. From doll house furniture makers to portrait painters, they will be showing how they work, not just what they have already done. They will also sell their work. Each Sunday will feature special workshops (today dulcimer-making and face-painting) and every week one workshop will be just for children. Today's kick-off program will be on the Mall side of the National Gallery of Art, between 6th and 7th Streets NW. June 5 will be Montrose Park; June 12, Southwest Waterfront Park; June 19, Great Falls, Virginia, Park; June 26, Lincoln Park. Then the same sequence will be repeated so that each park will be covered three times.
