By now, Capitol Hill Wine & Cheese is an old established picnic purveyor, its orange and white boxes having littered the finest outdoor concerts and poetry readings. And well-stuffed are those boxes, with German salamis and black forest hams, Polish kielbasi and French cheeses. Everything for your lunchtime comfort, bright yellow napkins and moist towels, wines and champagnes and chocolate mints for a sweet finish. The chicken salad is thick with juicy fresh meat, and the gazpacho has plenty of zing and crunch. But the ants at this picnic are the unpleasantly strong pate and indifferent, underripe brie in the George III lunch box, with a champagne bottle that needs a bottle opener, and a gazpacho lunch with no spoon. The fruit choice in midsummer should be something more seasonal than a Delicious apple; instead, you can get a little pack of Danish butter cookies. And medicinal Guild Tavola red wine could happily be replaced by something more drinkable. Choose your meats and cheeses carefully, check through your box for all the necessary contents, lobby for a pleasant wine, and it is a picnic for a concert on the Capitol steps.
