WHEN WASHINGTON WAS MARYLAND

MICHAEL FARQUHAR'S ARTICLE ON DR.

Charles Worthington's grave as physical evidence of the former sovereignty of the state of Maryland over the territory of the District was very interesting {J Street, May 6}. Readers may also be interested to learn that evidence also survives in the seal of Georgetown University, which bears the legend "Collegium Georgeopolitanum ad ripas Potomici in Marylandia" -- Georgetown College on the banks of the Potomac in Maryland.

RECOGNIZING INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS

RATINGS ON MOTION PICTURES AND

warning labels on record albums may (as Richard Cohen says in the May 6 issue) help those parents who want to regulate what comes into their home, but it should be remembered that 1) this rating business is purely arbitrary and would vary from person to person, and 2) piling this on top of our fascistic state and federal anti-obscenity laws has the effect of making life unduly difficult for those mature consenting adults who believe themselves capable of making their own decisions as to what movies they can see or what records they can buy.

When an arbitrary "X" rating automatically makes a movie or a record a "no-no" for distributors and some newspapers, that goes beyond helping those parents who want help. It is a de facto denial of every adult's right to make his own decisions.

So to the uptight parents (and Richard Cohen), I say: You take care of your territory, but don't tread on my rights.

WHEN RICHARD COHEN OVERCOMES HIS homophobia and realizes that homosexuals are human beings and not obscene creatures from which he and his children must be protected, he can inform the curious 5-year-old that two men might kiss on the lips for the same reason that a man and a woman do.
