Van Halen may have just lost its third vocalist, but its guitarist is about to get a new hip. Eddie Van Halen, 44, is scheduled to undergo hip replacement surgery later this month in Los Angeles. The band's manager has explained that Van Halen's hip problem was caused by years of jumping around onstage. . .

The Smithsonian Folkways label has signed a licensing agreement with musicmaker.com. The agreement will make the label's expansive folk music catalogue of 35,000 tracks available on the musicmaker.com site for custom compilation and digital download. The Smithsonian Institution acquired the Folkways collection--the master tapes, art work, correspondence files, business records and miscellany of Moses Asch's Folkways Records in 1987. . .

In order to join the National Classics Fraternity, Yeshiva University senior Benjamin Joffe, 23, has translated the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" songs into Latin. The fraternity's initiation rite, which dates to the 1950s, requires fraternity pledges to translate something from contemporary culture into Latin. It took Joffe a few weeks to translate the album. The hardest song, he said, was "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," because "so many words don't exist in Latin . . . there are a number of references to cars, trains, buses and taxis."
