Lowell National Historical Park, Lowell, Mass. The park is about an hour's drive northwest of Boston and makes an excellent day's outing. It is open year-round. The Mill and Canal Tour by foot, trolley and barge is offered daily from April to Oct. 12, departing every half hour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. During the rest of the year, the barges are removed from the canals and the tour proceeds by foot and trolley only. Shorter tours also are available. Reservations are necessary for all tours, since capacity is limited. There is no charge. Lackawanna Coal Mine, Scranton, Pa. Scranton is about a five-hour drive north from Washington. The county-maintained coal mine and the state-operated Anthracite Heritage Museum are located in McDade Park on Bald Mountain Road in Scranton.

The Eckley Miners' Village is open year-round. Admission is $2 adults and $1 for children ages 6 to 17.
