There are several operators who offer houseboat charters on the St. Johns River in northeastern Florida. All the boats come equipped with generator, air conditioning, linens, towels, full kitchen, dinghy and bath with shower. You must provide your own food and buy fuel. Among the operators:

Three Buoys Houseboat Charters, 2280 Hontoon Rd., De Land, Fla. 32720, (904) 736-9422. This year the boats are 46 feet long and sleep 8 to 10 people. Rental cost from Memorial Day to Labor Day is $1,595 for seven days, $895 for a three-day weekend and $895 for four days midweek. Mid-season rates (March 1 to the Friday before Memorial Day and the day after Labor Day to Nov. 30) are $1,395 weekly, $795 for a three-day weekend, $795 for four days midweek. Off-season rates (December, January and February) are $1,195 weekly, $675 for a three-day weekend and $595 for four days midweek.

Hontoon Landing Marina, 2317 River Ridge Road, De Land, Fla. 32720, (904) 734-2007. The 52-foot boats sleep 10. In-season rates are $420 for one day and $210 for each additional day. Off-season rates (Nov. 1 to Feb. 28) are $315 for one day, $158 for each additional day. If you rent for a week, you get the seventh day free.

Sanford Boat Rentals, Hidden Harbor Marina, 4370 Carraway Place, Sanford, Fla. 32771, (800) 692-3414. The boats are 44 feet long, sleeping eight or 10 people. In-season rates are $535 for two days, $725 for four days Monday through Friday, $725 for a three-day weekend and $1,075 for seven days. In the off season, Nov. 1 to March 1, all rates are $100 less than the in-season rates, except the two-day rate, which is $475.

Turtle Bay Houseboat Rentals, P.O. Box 904, Welaka, Fla. 32093, (904) 467-2262. The 40-foot boats sleep eight. In-season rates are $425 for a weekend, $550 for three days Monday through Friday, $700 for four days Monday through Thursday and $1,095 weekly. Off-season rates (Oct. 3 through Feb. 1) are $350 for a weekend, $450 for Monday through Wednesday, $550 for Monday through Thursday and $900 weekly.
