OUR FAVORITE vacation spot is the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel in Dixville Notch, N.H. Dixville Notch is the northernmost notch in the White Mountains, about 10 miles from Maine, Vermont and Canada. It is the place that makes the first report in the nation of returns for presidential elections; all voters vote at once just after midnight.

My parents took us and our young children a couple of times back in the '60s, and my great- aunt and uncle went decades before that. We have been going with our children and grand- children every year since 1989 (joined while she was alive by my mother, who adored the place). We keep going back for the wonderful activities, which include golf, tennis, swimming, boating, hiking and many more; for the fantastic food; for the fulltime children's camp; and for the beautiful grounds with profuse flowerbeds and gorgeous surrounding scenery. All the activities and the camp are included in the "room" cost.

Some of my favorite memories are of the gatherings in the dining room with our extraordinary waitress; of the athletic contests, cooking demonstrations, hay rides and professional and staff shows; and of my mother sitting on the porch, enjoying the view. There is now an Adirondack chair with a plaque in her memory on the porch.
