A recent boom in the number of new animated feature films and cartoons, aided in part by the proliferation of cable channels and the success of Disney releases, has created many off-camera acting opportunities. While recognizable stars often accept guest-voice spots in animated series, versatile voice actors, usually never seen, are responsible for many of the well-known characters.

JIM CUMMINGS

Characters: Bonkers D. Bobcat, Detective Piquel and Bulldog (in the series "Bonkers"), Winnie the Pooh and Tigger ("New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh"), Darkwing Duck ("Darkwing Duck"), Pete ("Goof Troop"), Monterey Jack and five others ("Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers"), Lurch (animated "Addams Family"), Tazmanian Devil ("Tazmania"), Maurice and Norman ("Marsupilami"), Louie the Ape and Don Karnage ("Tale Spin"), Phil, Ogg and Murray ("Cro"), Morocco Mole ("2 Stupid Dogs"), Mayor Manx ("Swat Kats").

FRANK WELKER

DON MESSICK

Characters: Bamm-Bamm Rubble ("Flintstones"), Astro ("The Jetsons"), Boo Boo Bear and Ranger Smith ("Yogi Bear"), Dr. Benton Quest ("Jonny Quest"), Muttley, Scooby Doo, Scrappy Doo, Papa Smurf.

Tidbits: Began career as Raggedy Andy in "The Raggedy Ann Show" in 1950. He has since done more than 100 cartoon series and 4,000 individual episodes. He also voiced the robot in "Lost in Space."

NANCY CARTWRIGHT

Characters: Bart Simpson ("The Simpsons"), Mindy ("Animaniacs"), Fawn Deer ("Bonkers"), male surfer dude ("Popeye and Son"), Pistol ("Goof Troop").

Live-action roles: Cliff Clavin's girlfriend in "Cheers"; "Twilight Zone -- The Movie."

Tidbits: Sound-effect specialties include faucet drip, trapped man in barrel and screaming elephants.

MAURICE LaMARCHE

BILLY WEST

Characters: Ren and Stimpy ("Ren and Stimpy"), Doug ("Doug"), Honey Nut Cheerios bee.

Tidbits: Sidekick for Howard Stern's radio and TV shows. Besides spots for AT&T's "i plan," he also has voiced Yogi Bear, Snagglepuss and Jinks the Cat since the death of voice legend Daws Butler in 1988.

ROB PAULSEN

Characters: Raphael (television's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"), P.J. ("Goof Troop"), Yakko Warner and Pinky ("Animaniacs"), DECKS ("Wake Rattle and Roll"), Arnold and Fowlmouth ("Tiny Toon Adventures"). Also is featured in "Biker Mice" and "Land Before Time II."

JESS HARNELL

Characters: Roger Rabbit (television), Wakko Warner ("Animaniacs"). Also works on "Tasmania," the new "Secret Squirrel" and "Prince Valiant."

Tidbit: Sang the title song for "The Love Boat Reunion Special."

TRESS MacNEILLE

Voices: Dot Warner and Marita Hippo ("Animaniacs"), Babs Bunny ("Tiny Toon Adventures"). Also various voices for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," "The Simpsons," "Chip n' Dale's Rescue Rangers," "Alvin and the Chipmunks" "Cro" and "DuckTales."

EARL BOEN

Characters: Chief Kanifky ("Bonkers"), Rhino ("Batman"); guest spots on "Gobots," "Scooby Doo," "Dungeons and Dragons."

Live-action roles: Psychiatrist on "Terminator 2"; also, "L.A. Law," "thirtysomething," "Seinfeld."

JOE ALASKEY

Characters: Uncle Beano ("Out of This World"), Plucky Duck ("Tiny Toon Adventures"), Doc (animated "Back to the Future"), Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn ("Who Framed Roger Rabbit"), Doctor Ziploc ("Spaced Invaders"). Also: "Bonkers" and "The Little Mermaid" movie.

Tidbits: To fill in a bad soundtrack, Jackie Gleason chose him to provide the voice of Ralph Cramden for a re-release of "The Honeymooner's Lost Episodes"; he also looped for Jack Lemmon in "Glengarry Glen Ross."

BILL FARMER

Characters: Goofy, Pluto.

Other roles: Played Justin Ballard Watkins in "Robocop" and did several featured voices for "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." Also appeared on "Murphy Brown" and "Not Necessarily the News."

JEFF GLEN BENNETT

Characters: Jitters ("Bonkers"), Lord Maldon ("Prince Valiant"). Also: "Land Before Time II," "Rugrats," "Animaniacs" and "Batman: The Animated Series."

APRIL WINCHELL

Characters: Peg ("Goof Troop"), Baby Herman ("Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "Tummy Trouble"). A regular on "Kid Power" and a contributor to "The Simpsons" and "Captain Planet."

Tidbit: Was a regular on her ventriloquist father's TV programs, "The Paul Winchell Show" and "Winchell Mahoney Time." (Paul Winchell, now a cartoon producer, provided the voice of Dick Dastardly on "Dastardly and Muttley" and Tigger on "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh."

DANA HILL

Characters: Jerry ("Tom and Jerry" movie), Max ("Goof Troop"), Marvin (TV special "Marvin"), Tank ("Darkwing Duck"), Scrappy Mouse ("Mighty Mouse"), Raggedy dog ("Raggedy Ann and Andy"). Has a part in the upcoming "Duckman."

Other roles: She played the daughter of Diane Keaton and Albert Finney in "Shoot the Moon"; also was in "Cross Creek" and "National Lampoon's European Vacation."
