Welcome to what only seems like 47,000 hours of televised Olympic competition. In reality, 1,210 hours from the Athens Games will be broadcast on NBC and its cable affiliates -- almost three times the coverage offered during the 2000 Summer Games.

Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, NBC, USA Network and Telemundo will carry every event. The seven-hour time difference between Athens and the United States prevents live broadcasts in prime time, so high-profile events such as gymnastics, swimming, diving, and track and field will appear via tape delay in prime time on NBC.

And technically, these Olympics will have a different look, at least for some viewers. NBC is also offering HDTV coverage on its 124 digital affiliates. Six sports -- swimming, diving, gymnastics, track and field, the medal rounds of basketball and the men's soccer gold-medal final -- will be on HDTV.

TV Week will have special sections with complete listings of events and airtimes in the Aug. 15 and Aug. 22 issues. So let the flame burn brightly, and let the Games begin.
