From the Joslin Diabetes Center, affiliated with Harvard Medical School, comes "Keep Moving! . . . Keep Healthy With Diabetes," a 45-minute exercise video for people who have Type 2 diabetes or are or at risk for it. The video includes exercise tips and a doctor's advice. Most of the 18 million Americans with diabetes have Type 2, in which the body makes insulin but doesn't use it efficiently. Another 41 million have "pre-diabetes," where blood sugar is above normal. Regular exercise can help normalize sugar levels in the former group and delay or prevent the onset of diabetes in the latter.
By showing two people -- one standing and one seated -- working out simultaneously, the video shows how its routines can be adapted for people with such diabetes-related disabilities as foot problems and low exercise capacity. The standing workout is a bit more aerobic, but still low-impact and well-suited to beginners.
Some of the step, tap and clap moves might be a bit tricky at first for folks with lesser degrees of coordination. Also, a seven-minute segment using elastic resistance bands offers no information on where to buy these or how much they cost. (Resistance bands are sold at most sporting goods stores for $10 to $20.)
THE BOTTOM LINE
This video leaves little room for excuses. In addition to the two slender young women demonstrating the moves, six people who more closely resemble the target population (i.e., older and larger) are shown performing some of the same exercises -- and having fun, to boot. The message: If they can do it, so can you.
