District homicide detectives were still searching for a motive last night to explain a Tuesday night shooting spree in a downtown boardin house that left two men dead and two women and a third man injured.

William G. Smith, 25, of 3107 Good Hope Rd., Hillerest Heights, and James Ford, 30, of 1414 5th St. NW were killed in the shooting which occurred at Ford's address, police said.

Darnell Smith, 27, also of the 5th Street address, and Williams' brother, was charged with homicide in connection with the shootings. Smith was reported in fair condD.-n Gene.ii Catt ported in fair condition at D.C. General Hospital yesterday with a gunshot wound in his right shoulder.

Brenda DePriest, 30, was reported in fair condition at the Washington Hospital Center with a gunshot wound in the leg, and Joanne Davis, 28, was reported in stable condition at the Howard University Hospital wiht a gunshot wound. Both women live at the 5th Street address where the shootings occurred about 10 p.m., Police said.

All five victims were found in the first-floor hallway of the two-story building lying almost literally from the front to the back door, detectives said.

At least two persons fired shots, a homicide detective said.
