Extended Area Outlook for Saturday through Monday - Chance of snow Saturday and Monday. Highs will average in the 30s lows in the teens. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 43 and a low of 28.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Cloudy, chance of snow, with winds becoming westerly at less than 10 knots by nightfall. Visibility will be from 3 to 5 miles. Ice has dampened wave action.

West Virginia: Today - Increasing cloudiness and not so cold with a chance of snow by nightfall, high near 30, low near 10. Friday - Snow possibly becoming mixed with rain, high in the 30s.

The national weather forecast for today - Rain will spread from the northern half of the Pacific Coast inland, to become snow across the north through the Great Lakes, as well as over much of the Ohio valley. Rain will fall across the central and lower Mississippi Valley into adjacent states. Skies will be partly cloudy in the Atlantic Coast states, as well as from the lower half of the Plains into the southern half of the Intermountain region and the southwest. Temperatures will be very cold through the northern states from the upper Missouri Valley through western and northern New England. Elsewhere, temperatures will remain unseasonably cold.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 19 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems shoudl restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will deteriorate slightly.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will remain near 3.3 feet.
