Extended Area Outlook: For Tuesday through Thursday - Chance of snow Tuesday followed by fair skies. Wednesday and Thursday. Highs should average in 20s to low 30s, lows in teens. It should be cooler in mountains. Washington's normal temperature range for this time of years is from 44 to 28.

The Nation Yesterday: Another arctic air mass sent temperatures tumbling over a large part of the nation yesterday and continued to push swiftly southward. Afternoon temperatures stayed well below zero from northcentral Montana into the northern portions of Michigan and Wisconsin, with International Falls, Minn, only reaching a high of 19 below. Clouds and light snow were associated with the surge of cold air reaching from the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley into Oklahoma and from the northern Rockies into the west central Plains. Travelers advisories were issued for last night in Lower Michigan near Lake Michigan where 1 to 3 inches of new snow was predicted to fall. Other travelers advisories for snow were in effect for the most of West Virginia and the southeastern third of Illinois. Travelers in Delaware were cautioned due to icy roads. Mostly clear skies prevailed across the southern part of the nation yesterday, except along the south Atlantic Coast. Showers lingered over the southern half of the Florida Peninsula. A cold front moved through the Pacific northwest causing some rain and drizzle in western Washington, with one third of an inch falling at Sampede Pass during the afternoon.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Snow showers will fall over the eastern portions of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, the northern and central Appalachians and the New England states. Some showers are forecast along will occur in the northern Pacific Coast and snow will occur in the northern sections of the platrau and Rockies.Most other areas of the nation will have clear of party cloudy skies. Temperatures will be quite cold over much of the nation, except for southern Florida, the Pacific Coast and the interior of the southwest.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 9 to 10 a.m. period was 13 for the pollutant, sulfur dioxide. Index values between 0 and 24 indicates good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will remain near 3:4 feet today.
