Extended Area Forecast for Friday through Sunday: Cold with periods of snow. Highs will average from the 20s, to the low 30s, lows will be in the teens. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 44 and a low of 28.

The national weather forecast for today - Snow furries will extend from New England across most of the central Appalachians, west across the Onio and mild and upper Mississippi Valleys and the north and central Plains. There will be rain and snow showers over the northern Rockies through Washington. Elsewhere skies will be fair or partly cloudy. It will be very cold from the mild and south Atlantic Coast states west across the Ohio and the mild and lower Mississippi Valley. Warm temperatures will prevail over southern California and southwest Arizona. It will be mild from the rest of the Pacific Coast east through the north and central Rockies. It will be quite cold in the north Atlantic Coast states with near seasonable temperatures elsewhere.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 19 for the polistant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will continue about the same.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will remain near 3.2 feet.
