Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Fair with a chance of late afternoon snow. Winds will be from the northwest at from 10 to 20 knots. Visibility will be more than 5 miles today, less than 2 miles tonight. Much of the bay will be under ice.

West Virginia: Today - Snow, highs in the teens, low near zero. Friday - Snow, high in the teens.

Extended Area Forecast for Saturday through Monday: Cold with from the upper 20s to the mid 30s, lows from near zero to the upper teens. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 44 and a low of 28.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Smow will fall over most of the Great Lakes, the Ohio Valley, the Appalachians southward to Georgia, Alabama and the Carolinas. Some snow will scatter over northern portions of the plateau and Rockies. Skies will also be cloudy over North Dakota and along most of the northern Pacific coast. It will be clear or party cloudy elsewhere. Temperatures will remain very cold over the southeast, while some warmings is forecast for the northern Rockies into the central plains. Some cooling is expected in the southwestern plains. The western U.S. will continue mild.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 19 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants, index values between zero and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will be good.
