Maryland and Virginia: Today - Variably cloudy, highs from the 30s to the 40s, low from the teens to the 30s. Thursday - Sunny, highs from the 30s to the 40s. There is a chance of snow flurries in the mountains on both days.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Fair with visibility of more than 5 miles. Winds will be from the west at from 15 to 20 knots. Most of the bay is covered by ice.

West Virginia: Today and Thursday - Cloudy, chance of snow flurries, highs from the mid 20s to the mid 30s, lows from the mid teens to the mid 20s.

Extended Area Forecast for Friday through Sunday: Fair and cold through the period with a chance of snow flurries in the mountains. Highs will be from the teens to the mid 20s, while lows will range from - 10 in the mountains to near 10 elsewhere. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 44 and a low of 27.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Snow will fail across the northern Plains, the upper Mississippi Valley, the Great Lakes and northern New England. It will rain or snow across the north Appalachians. Light intermittent rain will spread from southern California into southern Arizona. Considerable cloudiness will prevail across the northern portions of both the Rockies and the plateau. Elsewhere, fair or partly cloudy skies are expected. Much colder temperatures will move into the upper Mississippi Valley and North Dakota, with warmer readings expected across the lower Mississippi Valley, the Texas gulf Coast and Alabama. Little temperature chance is forecast elsewhere.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 20 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between zero and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becames hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will be good.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will be near 34 feet.
