Extended Area Outlook: For Monday through Wednesday - Fair skies except for a chance of snow flurries in mountains through the period. Highs should average in teens to 20s, lows from 10 below zero to 10 through period. Washington's normal temperature range for this time of year is from 44 to 27.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Snow will fall from New England across the Great Lakes region, the Ohio Valley and the Appalachians. Extensive cloudiness will prevail from the Pacific northwest across the northern Rockies and the northern Plains. Elsewhere, fair or partly cloudy skies are expected. Unseasonably cold temperatures will prevail east of the Rockies with a warning trend from Montana across Wycoming and the north and central Plains. Much colder weather will move into the south and central Atlantic Coast states, the southeastern states. The Ohio Valley and the lower Mississippi Valley. Seasonably mid-readings are forecast from the Rocky Mountains westward.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. peiod was 23 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidents. Index values between 0 and 25 Indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will remain about the same.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will remain near 3.3 feet through today.
