The National Weather Forecast for Today - Snow or snow flurries are expected in the Great Lakes region, northern New England and through the Appalachians. There will be a chance of showers in central and southern Florida. Rain will fall in exreme northwest California, western Oregon and western Washington. There will be considerable cloudiness in the Dakotas. The remainder of the nation will be mostly sunny. It will be colder or turning colder from the Atlantic through the eastern great Plains, with mild temperatures holding over much of California, southern Nevada and central Montana. The rest of the nation will generally be cold.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high readings in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 16 for the pollutant, carbon monoxide. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will remain about the same.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will remain near 3.1 feet through today.
