Extended Area Forecast for Saturday through Monday: Variably cloudy through the period, but a chance of precipitation on Sunday. Highs will be from the mid 40s to the 50s, lows from the upper 20s to the 30s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 45 and a low of 28.

The National Weather Forecast for today - There will be showers in Washington and a chance of light rain in northern Oregon and northwestern California. Some snow florries will fall from the northern mountains of New England into northeastern and western New York. Light rain will dampen southern Texas while elsewhere, skies will be sunny or mostly sunny. Seasonably cold temperatures will cominate most of the southern Atlantic and Gulf coastal states, across the southern Rockies and the southern plateau. The rest of the nation will have mild temperatures.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 17 for the pollutant, sulfur dioxide. Index values between zero and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will be good.
