Maryland and Virginia: Today - Sunny, highs from near 60 to near 70, lows in the 40s to near 50. Thursday - Rain, highs from the 60s to the low 70s.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Fair, with visibility of more than 5 miles. Wind will be from the south at from 10 to 25 knot. Waves in unprotected waters will be from 1 to 3 feet.

West Virginia: Today - Cloudy, thunderstorms likely, highs from the low to mid 60s, lows from the low to mid 40s. Thursday - Rain, highs from the mid to upper 60s.

Extended Area Forecast for Friday through Sunday: Partly cloudy through the period except for a chance of rain on saturday. Highs will be from the 50s to the low 60s, lows from the 30s to the low 40s. Normal Washington temperature for the period are a high of 49 and a low of 30.

The Nation Yesterday: A low pressure center in northern Kansas brought gusty winds and blowing dust along with springtime temperatures but very little rain to the Great Plains. Precipitation was limited to snow over the central Rockies and scattered showers and thundershowers over eastern Colorado. Unseasonably mild temperatures reached from the southern and central plains into the middle and lower Mississippi and the Ohio valleys. Scattered rainshowers with snow over the mountains reached from the Pacific northwest through Montana. California, mostly in northern portions, also had tight showers, with some snow over the mountains.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Scattered snow will fati from the northern and upper Great Lakes into the eastern Dakotas. Rain will dempen the remainder of the Great Lakes. Showers and thundershowers will cover the Ohio and most of the Mississippi Valleys into the central plains. Scattered showers with snow over the mountains will stretch from the Pacific Coast across the northern and central Rockies. The Southwest will be sunny and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy skies. Except for Maine and Florida, the nation east of the Rockies will have mild temperatures, with the Ohio Valley being unseasonably mild. The Rockies and the For West will be seasonable readings.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 22 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidents. INdex values between zero, and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons will lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity.The forecast for today indicates the air quality will be good.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will be near 3.5 feet.
