The National Weather Forecast for Today - Temperatures will be mild across the southeast third of the nation, seasonably cold in western Washington and the central and southern plateau regions while the remainder of the nation will have cool readings. Precipitation will fall from the Mississippi Valley eastward to the Atlantic except for Maine and the immediate Gulf Coast area. Precipitation is also expected across the Pacific northwest, the northern intermountain region and from northern Arizona northward across the central and northern Rockies. Precipitation will fall as snow from the northern New England states across the northern Great Lakes and into the upper Mississippi Valley and in the higher elevations of the Rockies. Skies will be generally cloudy in the precipitation areas and partly cloudy to fair otherwise.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 28 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will fall to near 5.0 feet today.
