Extended Area Forecast for Saturday through Monday: Chance of rain on Saturday and on Monday, fair on Sunday. Highs will be in the 60s, lows from the mid 40s to the low 50s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 62 and a low of 41.

West Virginia: Today - Sunny, highs from the 50s to the low 70s, lows from the mid 20s to the low 30s. Friday - Sunny highs from the 50s to the low 70s.

The Nation Yesterday: Heavy thunderstorms, accompanied by strong winds, heavy rain and hail, continued to push across the Southeast in a line stretching from South Carolina to southern Alabama. Ten tornadoes were reported; Alabama claimed eight tornadoes; Mississippi and Georgia each reported one. Locally heavy thunderstorms fell from eastern Tennessee into eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, western new York and from Wisconsin into Michigan. Scattered showers and thundershowers were reported across central California. Many record temperatures were across the Northeast, as unseasonably warm temperatures in the 70s and 80s were recorded across the eastern third of the nation.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Showers and thundershowers will fall along the Gulf Coast and rain will dominate the northern Atlantic Coast and the lower Great Lakes. Rain will be scattered from southern California into the central plateau, with snow in the higher elevations. Snow will also be scattered across upper Michigan. Fair skies are forecast elsewhere. It will be mild across the Atlantic Coast, the lower Great Lakese, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma and portions of the northern plains. Seasonably cool weather is expected elsewhere.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 24 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants Index values between zero and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will be good.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will be near 5 feet.
