Extended Area Forecast for Tuesday through Thursday - Chance of lingering rain Tuesday, otherwise fair. Highs will average in the 50s to near 60, lows in the 30s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 64 and a low of 42.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Chance of morning showers followed by partial clearing with winds shfting to the west at 15 to 25 knots. Visibility will be 5 miles dropping to less than 2 miles in showers. Waves in unprotected waters will average more than 2 feet.

West Virginia: Today - Partly cloudy with a chance of showers, high in the 60s, lows will range from the mid 30s to the mid 40s. Monday - Clearing and cooler, high in the 60s.

The National Weather forecast for Today - Rain will fall from the southeastern states acorss the Atlantic Coast states, the upper Ohio Valley, the Appalachians and the lower Great Lakes region. Widely scattered showers are expected from Montana across North Dakota and into Minnesota.Rain or snow showers will also be scattered across the southern halves of both the Rockies and the Plateau. It will be warmer across the Atlantic Coast states from North Carolina to southern New England, and across the northern halves of the intermountain region, the Rockies and the Plains. Colder weather will move into the southern Plains, the southern half of the Mississippi Valley, the Great Lakes region and the Ohio Valley. Elsewhwere, little temperature change is forecast.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 10 a.m. period was 13 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will remain good.
