Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Variably cloudy, rain likely.Wind will be from the west at from 20 to 30 knots today, but from 15 to 25 knots tonight. Visibility will be more than 5 miles, but less than 2 miles occasionally. Waves in unprotected waters will be from 2 to slightly over 4 feet.

Extended Area Forecast for Thursday through Saturday: Fair through the period. Highs will be in the 50s, lows from the 30s to near 40. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 64 and a low of 43.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Showers and thunderstorms will spread across the upper Ohio valley, the Atlantic coast, the Appalachians and the lower Great Lakes. Snow will scatter from the upper Great Lakes, across the upper Mississippi Valley and the northern plains. Fair skies will prevail elsewhere. It will be cooler from the Gulf Coast acorss the lower half of the Mississippi Valley, the Great Lakes, the Ohio valley, the Appalachians and the southern Atlantic coast. Warmer temperatures will move into the northern and central Atlantic coast, the western portion of the Great Plains, the Rocky mountains and the intermountain region. Little temperature change is forecast, elsewhere.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 13 for the pollutant, carbon monoxide. Index values between zero and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will be good.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will be near 7 feet.
