Extended Area Forecast for Thursday through Saturday: Fair through the period. Highs will be in the 80s, lows in the 50s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 67 and low of 48.

The Nation Yesterday: A high pressure area off the South Atlantic Coast continued to feed warm southerly winds into much of the eastern third of the nation. Temperatures reached the 80s in the midwest as far north as the Great Lakes and along the Atantic Coast as far north as New York. New England had seasonable temperatures ranging from the 40s in the north to the 60s in the south. Scattered thundershowers developed over the central and southern Rockies and spread into the High Plains. A few severe thunderstorms were noted in Colorado, while a tornado was reported south of Colorado Springs. Precipitation around the country was limited to a few showers in north Idaho, northwest Montana and over southern Florida.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Showers will remain over the central Rockies, while showers and thundershowers develop from the upper Mississippi Valley across the central plains into Oklahoma and northern Texas. There will also be a chance of showers in upper Michigan. Most other areas of the nation will have clear or partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will be unseasonably warm from the Ohio Valley into the middle Atlantic states, the Carolina and southern New England. It will be cool over the central Rockies and west central Plains, but the rest of the country will have mild weather.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 90 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 75 and 99 indicate unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will be near 5 feet.
