The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently released the names of about 1,300 nationwide winners of four-year Merit Scholarships, which are supported by grants from corporations, foundation, professional associations, unions and trusts.

This is the first of three groups of Merit Scholars to be named for 1977. Students who won National Merit $1,000 scholarships, and those who are being offered college-sponsored four-year scholarships will be announced later this month. Students who won the renewable, corporate-sponsored four-year scholarships will be anounced later this month. Students who won the renewable, corptrate-sponsored scholarships, will receive an average annual stipend of about $1,025 or $4,100 for the four years of college.
