A convict who escaped from a Georgia jail last month has been named in an arrest warrant in Friday's fatal shooting of an Arlington County policeman, county police said last night.

The suspect was identified as Charles Calvin Gary, 32. Authorities said he and another inmate escaped March 17 from the jail in Fulton County, Ga., in what they described as a "tricky, very tricky, professional job."

An official at the Georgia jail said Gary had been transferred there in January to appear as a witness at a trial. Gary had been serving a bank robbery sentence at the federal penitentiary in Marion, III., officials said.

Police said they obtained a warrant late Friday charging Gary in the death of Officer John W. Buckley, 26. They said Buckley was shot twice as he confronted two bank robbers fleeing from the Virginia National Bank at 3401 Columbia Pike.

One shot struck Buckley in the side and the other entered his back and lodged in his chest, police said.

The said Gary was named on warrants charging homicide, robbery and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

According to authorities Gary escaped from the Fulton County jail through the use of ladders, bolt cutters and other equipment apparently provided by outside accomplices.
