Extended Area Forecast for Saturday: Cloudy on Saturday and Sunday, partly cloudy on Monday. Highs will be from the 60s to near 80, lows in the 50s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 76 and a low of 55.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Showers will scatter widely through the Pacific northwest, northern California, the northern half of the intermountain region and across Montana. Thundershowers will scatter over southern Texas and Florida and there will be a chance of widely scattered thundershowers over the central and southern high plains. Elsewhere, it will be sunny. It will be warmer over the northern and middle Atlantic Coast, the upper Mississippi Valley and the upper Great Lakes. Except for cool readings over central and western Texas, the rest of the nation east of the Rockies will be mild. It will be seasonably cool elsewhere.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 31 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 24 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will be near 3.6 feet.
