The National Weather Forcast for Today - There will be a chance of rainshowers over northern New England and the eastern Great Lakes. Widely scattered showers and a few thundershowers will stretch from the Pacific northwest and southern California throughout the intermountain region, the Rockies and most of the Great Plains. Elsewhere, it will be sunny. It will be cooler over southern and continued cool in the northern portions of New England but continued warm or mild elsewhere from the Rockies to the Atlantic Coast. The Council of Governments Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 100 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 100 and 249 indicate hazardous air quality. When the Index exceeds 100 air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will improve.
