The National Weather Forecast for Today - Scattered showers and thunderstorms will stretch from the Texas Gulf Coast up the Mississippi Valley into the western Great Lakes. The most likely occurrence will be from eastern Oklahoma and northern Arkansas into eastern Iowa, southern Wisconsin and western Illinois. A band of weaker showers will extend from the middle Mississippi Valley eastward along the Tennessee Valley and throughout the Carolinas. Some showers will occur across the state of Washington. Temperatures east of the Mississippi Valley will be warm except they will be mild along the Atlantic Coast to the north of the Carolinas. Cool to mild readings will cover the rest of the nation. Cloudy skies will prevail in the main band of precipitation from the Gulf to the Great Lakes.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 110 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 100 and 249 indicate hazardous air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity.
