Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Cloudy, with visibility of from 3 to 5 miles. Wind will be from the southeast at less than 15 knots. Waves in unprotected waters will be less than 2 feet.

Extended Area Forecast for Thursday through Saturday: Partly cloudy, through the period, there is a chance of rain on each day. Highs will be from the upper 70s to the mid 80s, lows in the 60s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are high of 80 and a low of 59.

The National Yesterday: Afternoon and evening showers scattered widely from the Pacific Coast through the intermountain region, into the northern Rockies. Showers and thunderstorms from eastern New Mexico through the Mississippi Valley eastward across the Appalachians and the southern half of the Pacific Coast. Some of the thunderstorms were severe. One tornado touched down in east central Arkansas, while there was another tornado in southern Minnesota.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Showers and thundershowers ill scatter from southern Texas through the lower Mississippi Valley and across the upper Ohio Valley, eastward over the Virginias to southern Florida. Rain will also scatter from the northern Rockies, across the northern half of the Pacific Coast, then become widely scattered southward through California and northern Arizona. Temperatures will be cool over the Pacific Coast, the intermountain region and the northern half of the Rockies. It will continue unseasonably warm from the northern half of the Plains, across the northern half of the Atlantic Coast. Elsewhere, temperatures will be mild.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 34 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 24 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will be far.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will be near 3.2 feet.
