All federal, state and local government offices in the metropolitan Washington area will be closed Monday for Memorial Day, with the exception of essential services such as police and fire departments.

All schools, libraries, banks and savings and loan associations also will be closed.

Trash pickups will be made as scheduled Monday in Arlington, Fairfax and Prince George's counties, and in the city of Alexandria. Montgomery County trash pickups normally scheduled for Monday will be made the next regular day, in most cases Wednesday. In the District of Columbia and Falls Church, Monday collections will be made Tuesday, and Tuesday collections made Wednesday. Regular schedules will resume Thursday in both jurisdictions.

All state ABC liquor stores in Virginia will be closed Monday, as will county-operated stored in Montgomery County. Many liquor stores in Prince George's County and D.C. will be open. Most major chain stores will be open, although some will have curtailed hours.

Metrobuses will operate on a Sunday schedule Monday, and there will be no rail service. There will be no rush-hour fares charged. Montgomery County's "Ride-On" minibuses in Silver Spring and Gaithersburg will operate as usual.

Special rush-hour changes and other weekday traffic regulations will not be in effect in Washington Monday, and no parking meter payments will be required.

Area post offices will be closed. There will be no home delivery, buy special deliveries will be made as usual.
