The national weather forecast for today - Thunderstorms are likely over much of the Mississippi Valley region into the central and northern Great Plains. Cool showery weather, with snow possible at some of the higher elevations, will occur from the northern Rockies across the Pacific Northwest and into northern Utah. Showers and thundershowers will continue in Georgia, the Carolinas and Florida, possibly spreading into the mid Atlantic Coast states. It will be mostly sunny through the northeast and Ohio Valley regions and from California across the southern half of the Rockies. It will remain warm from the Gulf Coast into the upper Great Lakes and upper MIssissippi Valley regions.

West Virginia: Today - Sunny, highs will range from the upper 70s to mid 80s, lows will be in the 50s. Sunday - Sunny, high near 80.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Fair, winds will shift to the northwest at 12 to 15 knots by nightfall. Visibility will be more than 5 miles except in early morning fog. Waves in unprotected waters will average 1 to 2 feet.

Atlantic Ocean Beaches from Virginia to Cape Hatteras: Mostly sunny, high in the 80s through Monday. Water temperatures will be in the 60s.

Atlantic Ocean Beaches from Maryland to New Jersey: Mostly sunny, high in the 70s through Monday. Water temperatures will range from the mid 50s in the north to the low 60s in the south.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 115 for the pollutant, photo-chemical oxidants. Index values between 100 and 249 indicate hazardous air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will improve.
