The National Weather Forecast for Today - Showers will be scattered from the central Rockies across the central half of the Plains, the Missippi Valley and Gulf Coast. Showers and occasional thunderstorms will be more numerous from the central Missippi Valley ove the Ohio Valley and central Greak Lakes across the south half of the Atlantic Coast. Temperatures will remain unseasonably cool over the north half of the Rockies. It will continue warm through the Ohio Valley and central Great Lakes through the southeast from the lower Mississippi Valley across the southern Atlantic Coast. Temperatures will be warmer in the southwest also. Elsewhere, temperatures will be generally mild.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during me noon to 1 p.m. period was 41 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will deteriorate slightly.
