Extended Area Forecast for Friday through Sunday - Fair, except for a chance of showers on Sunday. Highs will range from the mid 70s to the mid 80s, lows from the mid 50s to the mid 60s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 82 and a low of 62.

The National Weather Forecast for today: Showers and cool tempertaures will reach from the Pacific northwest into the Idaho panhandle. Showers and occasional thundershowers will extend from the central Great Lakes across the central Appalachians and the southern Atlantic coast, northeastward into central New England. Temperatures will be warm across the south through the plains and Missouri Valley, across to the central Rockies: and Great Basin. Temperatures over the remainder of the nation will be seasonably mild.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 44 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 24 and 40 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes bazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will be near 3.1 feet.
