Atlantic Ocean Beaches from Cape May to Cape Matteras: Today - Sunny and breezy, high in 70s. Saturday - Sunny, highs near 80. Water temperature should range from upper 50s in north to low 70s in south both dews.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be over Florida and south Texas with a chance of them spreading across the remainder of the Gulf Coast states. Showers will reach from the Pacific Northwest across northern Idaho. There will be a chance of scattered showers and thundershowers In northern and south-eastern New England and also from the central Rockies over the north and central Plains throughout the Upper Mississippi Valley. Elsewhere, sunny skies will prevail. It will be cooler from western New York over northern New England and warmer over most of the Great Lakes region. Except for cooler temperatures over northern Montana and Montana mountains, the rest of the country will be seasonably warm or mild.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 80 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 75 and 99 indicate unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will remain near 3.0 feet through today.
