Atlantic Ocean Beaches from Virginia through Cape Hafferas: Cloudy, chance of showers, highs in the mid 60s. Friday - Partly cloudy, highs near 60. Water temperatures will be from the 60s to the mid 70s.

Extended Area Forecast for Saturday through Monday: Fair through the period. Highs will range from the low 70s on Saturday to the 80s by Monday. Lows will range from the 40s to the 50s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 84 and a low of 64.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Showers are expected over the northern and central sections of the Appalachians and Atlantic Coast. Scattered thundershowers will fall over southern Florida and over much of the plateau. Clear or partly cloudy skies will prevail elsewhere, temperatures will be hot, in the 90s, from the lower Mississippi Valley into the central and southern Plains and from the desert Southwest into the Interior of California. Cool readings in the 60s will reach from the Great Lakes to the northern Atlantic Coast as well as along the Pacific Caost. Temperatures in the 70s and 80s will dominate the remaineder of the nation.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 40 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardbus and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will improve.
