The National Weather Forecast for Today - Thunderstorms will be scattered from the Appalachians into the Ohio Valley, Great Lakes and the middle and upper Mississippi Valley. Showers will remain over New England and will be scattered from the northern Rockies into the northern and central Plains. Clear or partly cloudy skies will be seen across the remainder of the nation. Temperatures will be cooler from the western section of the Great Lakes across the upper half of the Mississippi Valley into Kansas. It will be cool in New England and across the northern tier of states. Most of the southern U.S. will be in the 90s.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the noon to 1 p.m. period was 30 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index value between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will remain fair.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potamac River stage at Little Falls will remain near 3.1 feet through today.
