The National Weather Forecast for Today - Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected from east Texas across the lower Mississippi Valley to the south Atlantic Coast states reaching as far north as the Ohio River. There will also be a few showers over the upper Mississippi Valley and the northern Rockies. Most other areas of the country will have clear or partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will be in the 60s and 70s across the northern tier of states and along the Pacific Coast. Eighties and 90s will prevail elsewhere with a new spots in the southwest desert reaching 100.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 105 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 100 and 249 indicate very unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will improve.
