The National Weather Forecast for Today - Scattered showers and thunderstorm at least in the afternoon are forecast east of the Mississippi River and through lows, southern Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota into Wyorning and southeast Idaho as well as in Arkansas and Louisiana. Elsewhere, it will be sunny to partly cloudy. Mild to cool temperature are expected in the North Atlantic Coast states, the northern Great Plains and northern Rockies into the central plateau and the northern ard coastal sections of California. It will be hot with temperatures frequently topping the 100 degree mark from western Texas into the interior of southern California and warm elsewhere.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 130 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 100 and 249 indicate very unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will remain about the same.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will remain near 3.0 feet through today.
