The National Weather Forecast for Today -- Showers and thunderstorms will be scattered from the Tennessee Valley through the eastern half of the Gulf Coast and the southern Atlantic Coast, including Florida. Showers will extend along the Atlantic Coast through New England. Showers will also be scattered from the Tennessee Valley and southern Ohio Valley through the central Mississippi Valley, across the central Plains and northern Rockies into the Pacific northwest. Temperatures will be warm over North Dakota and much of Minnesofa. It will also be warm from the southern intermountain area, through the south half of the Rockies, across the Ohio Valley and the southeast to the Atlantic Coast from Florida to southern New England. Elsewhere, temperatures will be seasonably mild.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 37 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast far today indicates the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will remain near 3.2 feet today.
