Two Alexandria men were arrested and charged with homicide this weekend in connection with the fatal shooting of Elmore E. Ward, 36, of 50 E. Reed Ave. and the stabbing death of Alvin Smith, 22, of 4418 Taney Ave.
Police are also investigating the Saturday morning shooting of Irene Hedspeth, 28, a District resident.
The three unrelated incidents occurred Friday and early Saturday, Alexandria police arrested Herbert Lee Williams, 25, of 1423 Duke St., and charged him with the shooting death of Ward, who was found on the floor of a house at 233 N. Payne St. Police say a party probably occurred there.
Police responded to a call concerning the shooting shortly before 1:30 a.m. Ward was pronounced dead at Alexandria Hospital.
Williams is being held in Alexandria jail in $5,000 bond.
James Earl Bailey, 23, of 4476 Raleigh Ave., is charged in the fatal stabbing of Smith. According to police, Smith was stabbed once in the chest shortly before 8:30 p.m. He was taken to Alexandria Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police said Smith and Bailey had been arguing outside Bailey's home. Bailey was held in jail with bond set at $7,500.
No arrests have been made in the 3 a.m. shotgun shooting of Hedspeth, 28, who is in the intensive-care unit at Alexandria Hospital, Police said Hedspeth was wounded in the chest when she was apparently caught in the crossfire following an argument between her brother and another man at a party at 613 N. Howard St. in Alexandria.
The two homicides follow a two-week period in Alexandria when no homicides were reported.
