Atlantic Ocean Beaches from Cape Matteras through Virginia: Today - Mostly sunny, highs in low to mid 80s. Tuesday - Chance of afternoon or evening showers, highs in 80s. Water temperatures should be in low 70s both days.

West Virginia: Today - Mostly sunny, highs in 80s to near 90, lows in upper 50s and 60s. Chance of afternoon and evening showers in north through Tuesday. Tuesday - Partly cloudy with chance of rain, highs in 80s to near 90.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Scattered showers and thundershowers will occur along the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Florida and from the upper Mississippi Valley across the northern and eastern Great Lakes region into extreme northern New England. There, will also be some showers and - thundershowers over most of the Rocky Mountain region, the northern plateau and north Pacific Coast. Sunny skies are expected elsewhere. Warmer temperatures are forecast from the southern Great Lakes into southern New England and it will be a little cooler in the Rockies. Temperatures in the 70s and 80s will reach from the north Atlantic states across the northern Great Lakes into the northern Plains, northern Rockies, Great Basin and interior of California. There will be some 60s along the northern and - central Pacific Coast. Nineties will prevail elsewhere, with some spots in the central U.S. reaching 100.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the noon to 1 p.m. period was 55 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 50 and 99 indicate unhealthy air quality. When the index ardous and persons with lung, heart exceeds 100 the air becomes hazand eye problems should restrict - their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will remain about the same.
