The National Weather Forecast for Today - Thunderstorms will be scattered from the Carolines to the lower Mississippi Valley and over west New York. Scattered showers can be expected over northern New England. Florida and the northern Rocky Mountains. It will be sunny over most of the nation with unseasonably warm temperatures confined to the southern Atlantic Coast states, Gulf Coast states and the desert southwest. Temperatures will be in the 90s over the southern quarter of the nation with 100 plus readings to be found only in the desert southwest. It will be mild from the upper Great Lakes to the upper Plains and in the Pacific Northwest with readings expected in the upper 70s. Elsewhere, it will be seasonably warm.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area curing the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 120 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 100 and 249 indicate very unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will remain about the same.
