A 15-year-old Maryland youth was killed and three other persons were in serious condition after the stolen car in which they were fleeing from police smashed into a tree early yesterday on Suitland Parkway in nearby Maryland, police reported.

Police said the chase began at 1:50 a.m. after two seventh district officers, John T. McBrayer and Timothy R. Green, noticed a car operating with its headlights off at Stanton and Elvins Roads SE.

Police said that as the officers approached it the car pulled away at high speed on Southern Avenue and into Suitland Parkway in Maryland, where the police gave up the chase.

According to police, the two officers were turning back to the District when they were approached by a passing motorist who reported the accident.

Police said the four youths were taken to Southeast Community Hospital where one of them, identified as Lorenzo Stokes of 5400 St. Barnabas, Rd. Temple Hills, was pronounced dead at 2:38 a.m. The other passengers, aged 20, 18, and 17, were reported in good condition at the hospital last night.

Police said the car involved in the accident had been reported stolen not long before the incident. No charges had been placed as of late last night.
