Extended Area Forecast for Thursday through Saturday - Fair on Thursday, rain possible on Friday and Saturday. Highs will be in the 80s, lows from the mid 50s to the mid 60s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 88 and a low of 69.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Showers and thunder-showers will scatter from the South Atlantic Coast into the lower Mississippi Valley, and extend across Oklahoma, Kansas and western Nebraska into the central Rockies. There will also be a few showers in northern Maine. Other areas of the country will have sunny skies. Temperatures will turn cooler from Virginia and the Carolinas, across Missouri and Arkansas into Kansas, Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle. The rest of Texas and the northern plateau will remain hot. Mild temperatures will reach from the North Atlantic Coast into the northern plains while it will be seasonably warm elsewhere.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 35 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 24 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will improve.
