A 63-year-old Northwest man was fatally shot early Tuesday during what apparently was a robbery attempt at 8th and N Streets NW, D.C., police reported.

Police said the victim, identified as Alfonso Chrisholm, of 1613 Buchanan St. NW, died shortly after police received a call about a shooting at 12:05 a.m.

An autopsy yesterday by Dr. Leroy Riddick of the medical examiner's office showed the victim died of a gunshot wound in the chest, according to police.

D.C. police also reported that just 3 1/2 hours before Tuesday's shooting they had arrested a 31-year-old Southwest man in connection with another slaying on the same corner July 1.

Police charged Leon David Morton, who gave his address as 1200 Delaware Ave., with felony murder. He was arrested in an apartment at the same address, police said.

Morton has been charged with the slaying of Ronnie Lee Ferguson, a 24-year-old man from Buffalo, N.Y. who was visiting Washington.

Morton was released on parole June 4 after serving about 12 years of a 21-year sentence for four rapes. He was picked up the same day of his release and charged with carrying a gun. He was released the following day on personal bond.
